Welcome To Serengeti National Park
Serengeti National Park is Africa’s most renowned park, famous for having the largest concentration of wildlife on the continent and for the migration of millions of wildebeest. This stunning park has filmed many of the most impressive nature documentaries. The name ‘Serengeti’ comes from the Maasai language, meaning ‘endless plains,’ which aptly describes its vast landscape. Covering nearly 15,000 km² (6,000 sq miles), Serengeti National Park is the second-largest park in Tanzania.

Witness the Great Migration in Serengeti National Park
The annual migration of over a million wildebeest is Serengeti’s main attraction. Watching these mammals thunder across the plains, crossing rivers in search of water and fresh grass is truly awe-inspiring. Mega herds stretch up to 40 kilometers long, covering around 1,000 kilometers. This journey is perilous for the wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles, who must outsmart predators. The Mara and Grumeti Rivers are particularly dangerous, with giant crocodiles and fast-flowing waters awaiting the herds. The Great Migration, listed as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, is often the highlight of visitors’ trips and is considered one of the world’s greatest wildlife spectacles.
You can witness the wildebeest migration at any time of the year, as the animals move in a circular route between the Serengeti and Masai Mara (Kenya). The exact timing of the migration in Serengeti depends on annual rainfall patterns. Our experienced Tanzania Specialist guides can make fairly accurate predictions.

Wildlife in Serengeti National Park
Serengeti National Park offers much more than just the wildebeest migration. Its diverse landscapes and rich wildlife make it unique in Africa. The endless plains are home to over 4,000 lions, 1,000 leopards, 225 cheetahs, and 3,500 hyenas. The abundance of prey, including wildebeest, zebras, gazelles, and buffaloes, supports many predators. The Serengeti is also one of the best places to see the Big Five – rhino, buffalo, elephant, lion, and leopard. Nearly all the famous African animals can be found in this majestic park, including rare species like the pangolin, East African oryx, rhino, and wild dog.
The captivating landscapes of Serengeti National Park range from savannahs with acacia trees and vast grasslands to rising mountains, lakes, and swamps. Each area has its unique atmosphere. Due to its natural beauty and variety of plants and animals, the park is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This place truly touches your soul. https://www.ngimaexpeditions.co.tz/wp-admin/www.ngimaexpeditions.co.tz/destinations

Welcome To Ngorongoro Crater
The Ngorongoro Conservation Area extends from Serengeti National Park in the north to the Great Rift Valley in the east, covering over 8,000 km² (3,200 sq. miles). This area includes the Ngorongoro Crater, Ndutu, Olduvai Gorge, Empakaai, Olmoti Crater, and Oldonyo Lengai Mountain. Its diverse landscapes—forests, valleys, savannahs, craters, lakes, and swamps—provide habitats for various animals.

Natural Wonder: Ngorongoro Crater
The renowned Ngorongoro Crater is the highlight of this area. Formed two to three million years ago when a large volcano erupted and collapsed, the crater has developed a unique ecosystem with diverse vegetation.
Today, the crater hosts the highest concentration of wildlife in Africa. It is home to zebras, buffaloes, warthogs, baboons, elephants, flamingos, ostriches, and hippos. Predators, including lions, hyenas, jackals, cheetahs, and leopards, are also abundant. A major draw of the Ngorongoro Crater is the presence of the Big Five: buffalo, elephant, leopard, lion, and rhino, all of which can be seen within this 20-kilometer (12.5-mile) wide and 600-meter (2,000-foot) deep crater. Enjoy the array of animals and the stunning colors of the landscape. The views from the crater rim over the crater floor are breathtaking. Due to its natural beauty, the crater is recognized as one of Africa’s Seven Natural Wonders.
Welcome To Tarangire National Park
Tarangire National Park, with its rolling savannah and iconic baobab trees, is a hidden treasure within the Northern Circuit. Named after the Tarangire River that winds through its scenic landscapes, the park serves as a vital water source for wildebeests, zebras, giraffes, and Thomson’s gazelles.
One of the park’s main attractions is the large herds of elephants, along with the chance to spot elusive leopards and cheetahs. During the late dry season, Tarangire boasts one of the highest concentrations of wildlife in Tanzania, offering a more tranquil experience compared to the busy Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater. Here, you can enjoy the serenity of the park without competing for views with numerous other visitors.

Bird watchers can delight in observing up to 500 species, while those interested in rare wildlife might spot wild dogs, long-necked gerenuks, and lesser kudus. The park is also home to the graceful oryx, providing a rich tapestry of animal life. Exciting game drives and walking safaris offer close-up encounters with this diverse wildlife.

ZANZIBAR ISLAND | THE AREAS
Where is Zanzibar Island?
Zanzibar is conveniently located on the shores of Tanzania and is exceptionally well placed to book a safari of a lifetime. With so much on offer here accommodation and activity-wise, Zanzibar Island has something for even the most selective of travelers. The vast and wild Selous Game Reserve is a mere 45-minute flight away. As you can see, with a Tanzania beach and safari holiday, nothing so luxurious could be easier.
Getting to Zanzibar Island
Zanzibar is only a short 20-minute flight from Dar es Salaam International which is the landing point for flights from all over the world. You cannot directly fly to Dar es Salaam from London or the US, but many airlines (KLM, Emirates) have two-stop flights which make the travel fairly easy (usually via Amsterdam and Dubai).
The best beaches on Zanzibar Island
Nungwi and Kendwa (North) – The best beaches on the island. Really beautiful and classic Indian Ocean paradise. Non-tidal turquoise waters and powdery white sands. Can sometimes be busy.
Pongwe (East) – Pongwe sits in a little concave bit of coastline which means the beach is glorious and when the tide isn’t completely in, it is seaweed-free and very pretty. Not the long sweeping beaches of the north, but a pocket of pure beachy gold. Less busy than the north.
Page and Dongwe (East) – Although tidal, here sit some of our favorite luxury boutique hotels. You would not be let down here in terms of accommodation. The beach is beautiful, but getting your toes wet is a bit harder than in the northern Nungwi regions as the sea is further out and very tidal.
Matemwe (North-East) – Slightly to the east of Nungwi, Matemwe is slightly tidal but when the tide is in there are a few of our favorite fantastic value accommodation options.
Stone Town Zanzibar Island
Visitors to Zanzibar Island tend to arrive and leave via Stone Town, the island capital and a historic hub of commerce and culture. This ancient center was the seat of the Sultans, whose crumbling palaces, bathhouses, and mosques are a legacy of this opulent and vibrant time at the heart of the gold trade.
The town has a very different commercial attitude today and one that thrives on the growing tourist market. The labyrinthine streets are lined with traders selling everything from mass-produced artworks to ancient wooden doors, from tie-dye t-shirts to jewels. The muezzins’ call to prayer echoes across the rooftops at the break of day, while cats, goats, dogs, roosters, and babies often make themselves heard in between! This old town remains a wonderful place to spend a night or two, getting lost among the elegant, ancient buildings, eating fresh fish on the seafront, and breathing in the sights, sounds, and smells of a truly Swahili center. A stay in Stone Town is always a wondrous assault on the senses, but a couple of nights are enough if you value peace and a good night’s sleep! Nowadays there are a good number of Boutique hotels in Stone Town – often recently renovated.
The islands of Zanzibar
Pemba Island – Pemba is truly off the beaten tourist track. It is beautiful, culturally rich, and with a few top-notch hotels which we love to recommend. It has some of the best diving in the world in pristine coral reefs and for those who love to be active, this is your place. The only downside is that the beaches are very tidal – so if you are looking for long white sands, you are better off in Zanzibar.
Mafia Island – Like Pemba, Mafia is relatively new to the tourism industry. However, it is home to some great lodges. Many are drawn to Mafia for the whale shark diving – an experience not to be forgotten. Give yourself 5 days here and you have a fantastic chance of seeing these majestic creatures up close. See our blog post all about it.
Private Islands of Zanzibar
Mnemba Island – This private island has only one lodge, Mnemba Island Lodge. It is the ultimate Indian Ocean beach destination for those who want complete seclusion away from the crowds. Mnemba is the ultimate Tanzania honeymoon beach lodge. This tiny island is everything you can imagine of a remote windswept paradise and is often voted one of the most romantic destinations on the planet.
Fanjove Private Island – Yes, Mnemba is the ultimate, but for those who do not wish to fork out over $1,500 per person per night and want a private slice of pure beach heaven, you cannot get better than Fanjove. Beach-shack-chic but ideal for those who crave luxury in its purest natural form.
Thanda Island – At around $25,000 a night, it has got to be unbelievable. But take a large group and occupy its 9 luxury rooms and it becomes an (admittedly, only slightly!) more affordable option for those who want complete Indian Ocean exclusivity.
